Oct. 4, 2006 - the International Day of Animals and St Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals

Pasaulinė gyvūnijos diena

For the fifth year in a row, this day is commemorated in Lithuania as "A Day of Compassion". On this occasion, Lithuanian Animal Care Society together with the State Food and Veterinary Service encourages people to refrain from the slaughter, transportation to slaughterhouses or hunting of animals, fishing, experimentation on animals and killing of animals in shelters (unless considered to be necessary by a vet) and also suggests that horses, circus animals are allowed to rest on this day.

Several events will take place on this day throughout the country.
